Haiti Slavery
After Christopher Columbus discovered Hispaniola which is now Republic of
Haiti and the Dominican Republic, Columbus’ and his men started to
enslaved the native Indians to look for gold.
The Indians were forced to look for gold in the river, by digging the land, in the
mountains, and any places the Spanish had in mind.
Since the Indians were not accustom to these type of brutal labor, they
eventually started to die.
Although before all the Indians were dying at a rapid rate because of these
type of work, a priest from Spain who witnessed what they were going through
said they were not meant for that type of work.
How Slavery Started in Haiti:
The priest’s solution was to instead bring African slaves from Africa to
work. His encounter with the Africans occurred during one of his
previous mission to Africa and he witnessed the type of work the
Africans were capable of doing.
Talk about doing God’s work. If only that priest did not go to Africa.
Needless to say the outcome the Africans had to go through after the
priest disclosed that information.
When the African slaves got to Hispaniola, it said that one African can
the work of 6 Indians. They needed very low maintenance and once
they got a beaten, they were working like animals.
So what happened when someone get his hands on a good product
like that, they go for more.
